About the workshops

Hawaii Energy is excited to offer the services of The National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project to our state. Classroom teachers (K-12) will have a unique opportunity to learn about energy and energy efficiency in a fun and exciting way at these upcoming workshops on Oahu and Hawaii.

At the workshop, educators will be provided with:

• School Energy Management Kit Teaches students about energy consumption and conservation through hands-on projects.

• Science of Energy Kit Designed to teach the concepts of force, motion, light, sound, heat, electricity, magnetism and energy transformations.

• Substitute Reimbursement Forms Hawaii Energy is providing the funding.

• Breakfast and Lunch

Agenda

8:30 a.m. Registration and Continental Breakfast 
Pick up materials and workshop supplies. Packets include supplemental classroom materials, Energy Infobooks at four grade levels, and much more! To determine how much you will learn today – take a quick pre-survey about energy knowledge.

9:00 a.m. Hawaii Energy Bingo!
Focus on the types of energy topics you’ll be learning about, meet your fellow participants, and win energy-saving prizes playing Energy Bingo!

9:30 a.m. Welcome and Introductions, David Mittelstadt, Hawaii Energy 
This workshop provides you with the opportunity to increase your energy knowledge as a consumer and educator. The lessons shared will provide a good foundation for teaching students of all ages and all learning styles.

10:00 a.m. The Science of Energy
Learn more about the forms of energy while experimenting with the Science of Energy Kit.

11:30 a.m. Sources of Energy and Electricity - Energy Roundup and Electric Connections
After learning about the forms of energy with the Science of Energy Kit, we will study the sources of energy: What are they? Where do they come from? And how do we use each of the 10 sources of energy? Discover how the different energy sources contribute to the generation of electricity.

12:00 p.m. Lunch & Energy Conservation at Home and School Web Game
This quick lesson allows you to understand your home and school as a system, and to better conserve energy resources.

1:15 p.m. Efficiency and Conservation At Home and School
Using Monitoring and Mentoring tools learn how to do an energy assessment with your students using the tools provided in your Energy Management kit.

2:30 p.m. The Carbon Cycle Simulation
This lesson allows you to better understand the carbon cycle and its relationship to climate change.

3:00 p.m. All the Great Stuff and Paperwork!
The workshop wraps up with an evaluation and a post-survey of knowledge. You will get to select your classroom materials and an Energy Infobook appropriate for your grade level. Please remember to pick up your substitute reimbursement form.
